With the passing of the winter solstice, sailors are starting to look ahead to summer and the Summer Sailstice celebration. Teresa Smith-Galoob has signed up again to sail her Rooster class sailboat, #715, in her own 'self-time' race around Snake Island. She'll be sailing out of Little River Marina on Lake Thunderbird.
Lake Thunderbird is a resevoir built in the early 60's with a surface area of 6,070 acres with 86 miles of shoreline. The average depth is 15.4 feet, and the maximum depth is 57.6 feet. The sailing varies with typically moderate winds in spring and fall, and sometimes challenging summer conditions when strong southerly winds can create choppy waters. Summer Sailstice is the first day of summer so a good time to keep a weather eye out.
We always appreciate discovering how much sailing goes on in the middle of the country. Lakes and reservoirs are home to many avid sailors and competitive racers. Lake Thunderbird is deep enough for many keelboats and lots of dinghy sailors on boats like Teresa's Rooser or Sunfish, Lasers and many other small boats.
When you're ready, add your sailing plans for Lake Thunderbird or the many other lakes, rivers and reservoirs that are spread across the country.
