Bay Yacht Club joined forces with MORF in inviting members of other area clubs to participate in Summer Sailstice 2012. Fair Winds and Following Seas would not be the byline for this combination race/cruise from Corpus Christi to Port Aransas the weekend of June 22-23 in celebration of the Summer Sailstice. Something more like “Little to No Wind, and Seas and Current on the Bow” would be more appropriate. On Saturday the forecast was for light winds however most cruisers were rewarded with a nice upwind sail across Corpus Christi Bay, only to become frustrated for about eight miles in the ship channel with the wind AND current both aligned perfectly on the bow. Some fared better than by departing for Port Aransas on Friday or very early Saturday morning. On Saturday seven boats participated in the BYC/MORF offshore regatta held in conjunction with Summer Sailstice and the offshore racing was near perfect.
The City of Port Aransas Municipal Marina provided the venue for the party where racers and cruisers alike dined on BBQ while awaiting the race results and awards.
By Sunday the winds dropped to almost nothing and while a few dedicated crews did manage to sail to Corpus once they reached the bay, the rest opted to motor all the way. None the less it was a great weekend on the water and a huge improvement over the high winds we experienced this spring.
The fleet is in - ready for Sailstice celebrations.
Hey, nice Sailstice shirt and great setting for a gathering of sailors.
