Stingray Harbour Yacht Club members had no shortage of Sailstice fun this year, and enjoyed a whole weekend of organized and disorganized activities on their anchoring cruise. After enjoying a screening of Captain Ron at the Pool House “theater” on Friday night, the gang headed out to the perfect anchoring spot chosen by Island Time.
For late afternoon games, crews split into two teams, The Coronas and The Grand Burrito. Creative games included backwards races. Some participants wore flippers around ankles and arms for a unique look.
After working up a good thirst at the games, it was time for hors d’oeuvres and the drink recipe contest. Some tasty concoctions were cooked up, including a “shaken-not-stirred” Mango Margarita Martini created by Pete and Denice Haley of Solemn Vow. The winning recipes were:
First Place -- Grog Island Ice Tea by Jamie and Jared of Saba Rocks II (Grog Island is a small island just north of Pirate Beach).
3 parts Mount Gay Rum1 part Triple-Sec
1 ½ parts Major Peters’ Sweet & Sour Mix
2 parts Coca Cola
Serve over ice.
Second Place -- Vela Solsticio (“sail solstice” in Spanish) by Vicki and Ken Juul of Luna Loca.
2 oz. Sint Maarten Guavaberry Liqueur
5 oz. Grapefruit juice
Carefully add ½ oz. Grenadine
Serve over ice in a tall glass garnished with fruit. (Vicki and Ken garnished it with little stars and moons cut out of pineapple.) Grate fresh cinnamon on top.

Third Place -- Mobjack Mojitos (Mobjack is south of Stingray Point)mixed by Kelsey and Dan Desmond on Poppy.
3 shots white rum
1 shot simple syrup (heat 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water)
½ shot lime juice Crushed fresh mint leaves
Club Soda
Crush leaves in shaker, add rum, water and lime. Pour over ice and top off with soda water. Mix in glass and enjoy.
Other creative drinks included the Crab Pot, which came with its own fishing lure stirrer and Island Time, with palm tree stirrers and fresh slices of orange and lime. The Island Time recipe is:
3 parts Mount Gay Mango
5 parts Kokomo Fruit Punch (a mixture of orange, pineapple, passion fruit and lime juice, banana, pineapple and strawberry puree made by Lakewood Juices)
1 part limeade concentrate
3 parts seltzer water
Stir above ingredients together.
As Stingray sailors enjoyed the winning recipes and the sun was setting, Joe used his blow touch to start a campfire. (Someone suggested for next year a good team contest would be to start a fire without a match. Joe said he already did that.) Later that evening everyone enjoyed hot dogs, chicken sausage and s’mores around the campfire,, and then it was time for more fun and games.
The Limbo Hook and an “adult” sun piñata filled with airplane liqueur bottles, salt water taffy and other grown-up goodies left everyone dizzy and giddy.
The plan for Sunday was to meet at the beach at 9 a.m. to enjoy fresh fruit and o.j. plus other homemade breakfast goodies, clean the beach up and then sail back around 11 a.m. However, Sunday morning brought 20 mph winds. According to the weather, the winds were to continue to build throughout the day. A lot of people decided to leave early. However, before they left they did stop by the beach to clean up. For those who went to the beach around 9 a.m. and sailed back as planned, the winds were perfect once they got on the Chesapeake Bay.
