“Sunny skies and light winds greeted sailors of the Mark Twain Lake Sailing Association on June 18 as we celebrated the Summer Sailstice,” reports Mark Stillwell, MTLSA Commodore of Vice. “That gave us an opportunity to scrub the decks and perform needed maintenance before heading off for a sail.”
However, chores did not dampen our spirits. Ten sailboats left Blackjack Marina for a sail to Spalding Pool after lunch. Light and variable winds made for a relaxing afternoon in 80 degree temperatures. "Out Numbered" with Admiral Beth and Captain Jim added to the festivities by flying a bright color geneker. Several sailors were seen napping as they enjoyed the sunny day. Winds increased to 7-10 knots for about an hour of sailing as the afternoon turned to evening.
Dinner time found eight sailboats in an evening raft-up in Skiers Cove. This anchorage is protected from southerly winds and power boat traffic. It also gives a good view of moon rise and sunset. The protected waters gave sailors a chance to cool off with a lazy swim or paddle a kayak.
Meals varied from hotdogs to steak. Several bottles of wine and spirits were served to toast the evening. The clear night sky allowed the moon to lighten the evening. Unfortunately, the wind was too light for a night sail.
All sailors reported a relaxing and fun evening.
