'San Carlos kids received a terrific introduction to sailing on a perfect Sailstice sailing day.' |
The following is from Marisa Velasco of San Carlos Yachts in San Carlos, Mexico. They've taken Summer Sailstice and created
a fun event to introduce kids to sailing plus gather sailors to clean up the local beaches. A Sailstice ‘hats off’ to Marisa and the San Carlos sailing/cleanup party crew.
Hello all and HAPPY SOLSTICE/SAILSTICE DAY! Please forgive the forward again, but I wanted to use it as an opportunity to thank all of you for all your hard work and participation in the events we had over the weekend. A few statistics to help out:
SATURDAY 6/17
We had 9 kids, 19 skippers and crew, and 6 boats go out. Thanks to Carla Grover's organization, everyone got their boat assignments and t-shirts before heading off for a gorgeous couple of hours of PERFECT sailing! Wind and water conditions could not have been any better and we all managed to get out on the bay towards Miramar and back to the marina by 1 pm. We all met up at Barracuda Bob's then and had ice cream -- even the adults! Never did find out what happened to the other 15 kids from the orphanage (Dan on Island Time?) who never showed, but we had a great time anyway. Most of the kids got a chance to take the helm and discover the joys of sailing!
The other highlight for the day was a surprise donation of 500 pesos from Scott Elliott of Costa del Mar, who walked in to our office with the money, to make sure that we had enough ice cream for all the kids! He also offered his house as a base for the folks who would be doing the beach cleanup the following day at Catch 22. Gracias, Scott! It was too late to put your name on the t-shirt, but I did save you a yellow sponsor's t-shirt at the office. Please call 226-0044 to let us know when you'd like to come over and pick it up.
SUNDAY 6/18
We had 77 people show up for the beach and bay cleanup. While we didn't get to our goal of 100 people, this was still a slightly bigger showing than last year. The good and bad news about the trash pickup around the Bay was that there was much less trash to pick up, so people had to go farther out in their dinghies to pick up the almost 100 bags that we collected in the 1.5 hours out. There were only 5 people who worked on Algodones/Catch 22 beach, but they managed to do their fair share and get their picture in the local paper too, the El Vigia. Did you all see the article? It was in yesterday's El Vigia paper.
We also did our best to consume the 150 hotdogs and buns, chips, and ice cream that were donated by Jan at Barracuda Bob's, Ocean Camp and MV Venture Forth. The sodas donated by CEA were the biggest hit, as by about 1 pm we were all out of them. It was a toasty 90+ degrees and HUMID that day!
We also raffled off quite a few prizes donated by local merchants - Star Marine Center, Il Deserto, San Carlos Yachts and Marina San Carlos. Most everyone went home with a prize. Gracias all!
Thanks again, everyone, for all your hard work. We look forward to doing this again next year!
Sincerely,
Marisa Velasco
