June 8 - World Oceans Day - Rejoice?

Mankind has been sailing for about 4,000 years and during that time has been in awe of the power, expanse, capacity and bounty of the oceans.  in simpler sailing terms the ocean has been a great place to spend weekends, to go racing, to cruise to distant shores and generally a friendly ally for modern day recreational pleasures.  Whether you look at if for it's enormous heritage and impact on our lives or as a place to escape for the weekend, the oceans are stressed and in need of our help.

World oceans day is for all of humanity to recognize the value of the oceans and the need to protect them.  Summer Sailstice partners with Sailors for the Sea so all sailor's more intimate relationship with the ocean can be utilized to sustainably benefit ocean health.

Sailors for the Sea encourages us to recognize World Oceans Day and to sail sustainably all year long.

Summer Sailstice unites us all in celebration of sailing and shares in the adventure and enjoyment we all get by pushing off from shore under sail.  We're enthusiastic supporters of the oceans that have provided so much fulfillment in our lives and supporters of the many people and events who work hard to recognize and preserve it for future generations.

World Oceans Day helps us remember what's under our keel may be more important than what's on the surface and reminds us the seas are challenged by the stresses of humanity but also to rejoice in their resilience.  There is much progress being made and many good people, many of them sailors, working hard to make sure they will be clean, blue and healthy far into the future.  And, of course, remain a great place to go sailing!
