Encinal Yacht Club Celebration takes the cake!

Encinal Yacht Club 2003 Summer Sailstice celebration:

Angel Island was the place to be the Summer Sailstice weekend of June 21st through the 22nd. It was a family cruise out (Got Family???) and what a great time all had. Some of the folks arrived early to establish a beachhead and start the raft-up on Thursday, including the Rogers' and guest of the Glaser's, Fred Goozen, (aka Diablo-Canyon for supplying power to the Mann's and Glaser's boats with his generator). The rest of us showed up Thursday night, Friday and Saturday for a total of 19 Boats and lots of dinghies. And you better believe we're going to name everyone of them:

Our hosts the Mann's - were on Yes Dear

Glaser's on Farmor,
Simon's- Pegasus,
Rogers- Bon Voyage,
Darbee- Kismet,
Loza-Foy- Destiny,
Scheck- No Worries,
Maher - Blarney III,
Kidd- Sashay,
Bean- Freya,
Brunelle- Aldebaran,
Lauman - Astraeus,
Leavitt- Esmerelda,
Power- Gabrelle,
Kutz- Tumbleweed,
Chambreau- Impetuous,
Hollenback- Soul Mates,
Darling- Bequia,
Fred Goozen- Never Say Never,
The Dinghies: Bateman, Wetteroth and Woltring.
Did we leave anyone out?

Did we mention Family Cruise-out? There were parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, and kids. I probably miscounted, but at least 15 kids were roaming about the Island at one time and there were even more if you count Rodd Kidd with his giant water-gun, sneak attack on the teens (who all had water balloons hiding in place for firing at approaching dinghies).

Games! We had games, thanks to Jennifer Mann and her creativity! The first game was a Water Balloon Toss and the "dry winners" were: Patrick Maher and Erik Glaser. Next came the Grape Spitting Contest; some people ate the grape, no points for that: This was a close call and the longest distance went to Niels Glaser. No comment! Last was a special contest: Who Made the Best Dessert? It was a tough decision made by professional tasters, John Foy and Janis Glaser, and the winner was: Carolyn Hollenback with "Better Than Sex Cake". And guess what, she has been kind enough to share her recipe with all:

INGREDIENTS:
1 German Chocolate cake mix
1 can sweetened and condensed milk (she used one jar fudge topping)
1 jar caramel ice cream topping
1 8 oz container of Cool Whip
6 oz crushed Heath bar (substituted with Skor Bits)
6 oz crushed plain Hershey bar (see above; she used the Skor bits instead)

DIRECTIONS:
Bake cake as directed in 9x13 pan. Take the handle of a wooden spoon and poke holes all over the cake while it's still warm. Pour can of condensed milk over warm cake, then repeat with caramel topping. Refrigerate for 6 hours. Frost cake with Cool Whip topping and sprinkle with crushed candy. Serve immediately.

And the comments that came out after everyone tried the cake??? "It's almost better than sex!" "That's all the sex you get - so you might as well have a double helping of whipped cream." "And this is a family Cruise-out?"

There were Summer Sailstice Flags available to hang on the boats and Chris Maher modeled the Summer Sailstice Tee shirt which is available online at www.summersailstice.com. It was a double-header with the sun staying out longer than any other day of the year and on Friday; Larry Ellison decided to join us with his Oracle crew! Well, he didn't exactly raft up with us; he anchored his big ship out in Raccoon Straights and served dinner to his crew (after a day of racing on the bay) as the sunset.

Sunday morning ended with the Mann's making Danish Aebleskivers (yum, yum) and the Glaser's along with Gillian Loza making the Fizzes. Michael Mann and Erik Glaser delivered the goods via dinghy to all. And to all, a good weekend!

That's EYC news.

Encinal Yacht Club celebrates three in a row!

After participating in Summer Sailstice from the EYC docks the past two years in cooler, foggy San Francisco Bay weather Encinal Yacht Club was given the kind of day meant for sailing celebrations. Daybreak, Saturday, June 21st was crystal clear for the 12 EYC boats rafted at Ayala Cove. With Summer Sailstice weekend promising to be a busy one several boats had come on Friday to secure prime beach front locations for the festivities. This is the third year in a row that EYC has celebrated Sailstice with Peggy Kidd spearheading the festivitie. The club's growing celebration of sailing is becoming an annual midseason tradition.

The first two years of Summer Sailstice Encinal Yacht club simply celebrated at the EYC docks with sailing dinghy rallies and dockside cocktails but this year the club decided to put in on the schedule as a full club cruise. Ayala Cove is a popular SF Bay harbor on Angel Island state park - an uninhabited island loaded with hiking trails and great views in the middle of the bay.

Encinal Yacht Club members were treated to perfect Bay Area weather with terrific sailing breezes, warm temperatures and front row seats at the Ayala Cove beach. Many members sailed over Saturday morning while four America's Cup boats raced on the San Francisco waterfront.

"We came over Friday night, hung out on the cove most of Summer Sailstice and then the whole fleet went ashore for a celabratory barbecue Saturday evening" stated Chris Maher EYC member and owner of the Jeanneau 43 Blarney 4. Chris also pitched in and took Summer Sailstice burgee orders from the EYC fleet. A week later the Catalina 36 Yes Dear was spotted up the Delta cruising with her Summer Sailstice burgee still flying. Encinal Yacht Club is now one of several clubs that have participated in Summer Sailstice since its inception in 2001.
