If you're looking for a shore-based Summer Sailstice celebration, why not take a tour of the wooden tall ship, Matthew Turner in her final stages of construction.
Built in Sausalito, CA, Matthew Turner will be the first tall ship to set sail in California's Marin County in over 200 years. She is 132 feet long, 25 feet wide, and carries mainmast which is 100 feet tall. In traditional style, the wooden ship was built by hand (with the help of a few convenient modern-day tools) from Douglas Fir, Oregon White-Oak, and Bronze Fastenings.
Matthew Turner is being constructed by Call of the Sea - an educational nonprofit that has been providing marine environment education for Bay Area youth for over ten years. The traditional vessel will work along side the schooner Seaward and expand Call of the Sea's capacity to provide additional programs for the up to 15,000 youth who access the programs annually.
'...we’re creating a floating foundation for a hundred years of experiential youth education by building a historic, yet innovative wooden tall ship, Matthew Turner.'
'Through our empowering shipboard programs aboard schooner Seaward, we cultivate environmental stewardship in future generations while celebrating maritime history and tradition.'
However, if you are on the USA East Coast, specifically in Connecticut, perhaps you would like to celebrate your shore-based Summer Sailstice at the Mystic Seaport Museum's WoodenBoat Show. Presented by WoodenBoat Magazine, the annual show boasts in-water and on-land boat exhibits, reader-built boats, expert skills demonstrations, marine vendors, families building their very own boats, and more.
